Improvement in global and segmental left ventricular function after coronary bypass surgery

    Summary

    Coronary artery bypass surgery significantly improves left ventricular function during exercise, enhancing cardiac reserve. This improvement, measured by ejection fraction and wall motion, was observed even in patients with prior myocardial infarction.

    Background:

    • Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABS) aims to improve myocardial perfusion and ventricular function.
    • Assessing ventricular reserve pre- and post-operatively is crucial for evaluating surgical outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the impact of CABS on resting and exercise ventricular function.
    • To determine if CABS improves global and regional left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) function and reserve.
    • To assess the influence of prior myocardial infarction (MI) on post-CABS ventricular function.

    Main Methods:

    • Multiple gated cardiac blood pool scintigraphy (MGBPS) was used to assess LV and RV ejection fraction (EF) and segmental wall motion.
    • Ventricular function was evaluated at rest and during exercise before and after CABS in 21 patients.
