Thyroid function in hepatic schistosomiasis

M H Fahmy, M Said, F Amara

Annals of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology
    |August 1, 1978
    PubMed
    Summary

Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis did not significantly alter thyroid hormone levels in men. Thyroid function, including thyroxine and tri-iodothyronine, showed no correlation with liver function or protein levels in affected individuals.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Hepatology

    Background:

    • Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis is a significant parasitic disease affecting the liver and spleen.
    • Thyroid dysfunction can occur in various chronic illnesses, necessitating investigation in schistosomiasis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate thyroid hormone levels in men with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis.
    • To determine if thyroid function correlates with liver function or serum protein levels in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed serum thyroxine (T4), tri-iodothyronine uptake (T3-uptake), and free thyroxine index.
    • Compared values between 17 men with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and 10 healthy controls.
    • Analyzed correlations with serum protein levels and liver function tests.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences were observed in T4, T3-uptake, or free thyroxine index between patients and controls.
    • Thyroid hormone levels did not correlate with serum protein concentrations.
    • No correlation was found between thyroid function tests and liver function tests.

    Conclusions:

    • Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis in men does not appear to cause significant alterations in thyroid hormone levels.
    • Thyroid function in this condition is independent of liver function and serum protein status.
