    Summary

    Opportunistic Candida fungi overgrowth in the body was not linked to prior lymphocyte system damage. However, prolonged visceral candidiasis may lead to secondary immune deficiency.

    Background:

    • Superficial and visceral candidiasis are common opportunistic fungal infections.
    • The role of T- and B-lymphocyte systems in the pathogenesis of candidiasis requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between lymphocyte system integrity and the increased activity of Candida species.
    • To identify potential immune system alterations associated with chronic or severe candidiasis.

    Main Methods:

    • Examination of 73 patients with varying degrees of Candida infection (superficial, visceral, carriers).
    • Assessment of lymphocyte function, specifically T- and B-lymphocyte systems.
    • Evaluation of lymphocyte reactivity to phytohemagglutinin in a subset of patients.

    Main Results:

    • No evidence was found linking increased Candida activity to pre-existing organic lesions in T- and B-lymphocyte systems.
    • A subset of 16 patients with chronic visceral candidiasis (8-12 years) and multiple organ involvement showed reduced lymphocyte reactivity to phytohemagglutinin.

    Conclusions:

    • The study suggests that primary organic lesions in lymphocyte systems do not precede opportunistic Candida infections.
    • Reduced lymphocyte reactivity in chronic visceral candidiasis cases may indicate secondary immune insufficiency developing due to prolonged infection.
