    Summary

    Radiographic analysis of traumatic aortic rupture in 20 patients revealed a mediastinal-to-chest width ratio. A ratio greater than 0.25 at the aortic arch indicates a high likelihood of aortic rupture.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of the mediastinal-width to chest-width (M/C) ratio on plain radiographs for diagnosing traumatic aortic rupture.
    • To determine optimal M/C ratio thresholds for sensitivity and specificity.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of plain radiographs from 20 patients with confirmed traumatic aortic rupture.
    • Calculation of the M/C ratio at three thoracic levels.
    • Comparison with two matched control groups without aortic tears.
