    Summary

    Two pheasant vaccinations with a commercial Eastern-Western encephalitis vaccine did not produce significant antibody titers or protection against Eastern encephalitis virus challenge. This suggests the vaccine may be ineffective for pheasants.

    Background:

    • Eastern and Western Equine Encephalitis (EEE/WEE) are significant viral threats to avian species.
    • Vaccine efficacy in avian species, particularly pheasants, requires thorough investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a commercial Eastern-Western encephalitis vaccine in pheasants.

    Main Methods:

    • Pheasants received two vaccinations with a commercial Eastern-Western encephalitis adjuvanted cell-culture vaccine.
    • Hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) titers were measured post-vaccination.
    • Vaccinated pheasants were challenged with Eastern encephalitis virus to assess protection.

    Main Results:

    • Vaccinated pheasants did not develop significant hemagglutination-inhibition titers.
    • No significant protection against artificial challenge with Eastern encephalitis virus was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • The commercial Eastern-Western encephalitis vaccine, administered twice, failed to induce protective immunity in pheasants.
    • Further research is needed to develop effective vaccination strategies against EEE/WEE in pheasants.
