    Summary

Two cases of skeletal abnormalities, including a tarsometatarsal spur and a crossed-beak with microphthalmia, were identified in 14,891 domestic poultry necropsies. This study highlights rare congenital defects in avian populations.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Pathology
    • Avian Health
    • Congenital Abnormalities

    Background:

    • Necropsies are crucial for diagnosing diseases and abnormalities in domestic poultry.
    • Skeletal abnormalities can impact poultry welfare and production.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report rare skeletal abnormalities found during routine domestic poultry necropsies.
    • To document specific cases of tarsometatarsal spurs and crossed-beak with microphthalmia.

    Main Methods:

    • Performed 14,891 necropsies on domestic poultry.
    • Identified and documented two cases of skeletal abnormalities.

    Main Results:

    • Two cases of skeletal abnormalities were detected out of 14,891 necropsies.
    • Case 1: Tarsometatarsal spur in an adult female chicken.
    • Case 2: Crossed-beak associated with microphthalmia.

    Conclusions:

    • Skeletal abnormalities like tarsometatarsal spurs and crossed-beak are rare in domestic poultry.
    • These findings contribute to the understanding of congenital defects in avian species.
