    Summary

The spleen's role in autoimmunisation remains unclear, despite its therapeutic use in removing it. Current research on immune mechanisms does not fully explain the spleen's importance in immune responses.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Veterinary Medicine

    Context:

    • Re-evaluates a sixties animal model of autoimmunisation using altered blood cells.
    • Considers the spleen's role in autoimmunisation based on modern immunological understanding.

    Purpose:

    • To critically assess the significance of the spleen in autoimmunisation processes.
    • To reconcile observed therapeutic effects of splenectomy with current immune mechanism research.

    Summary:

    • The spleen's exact function in autoimmunisation is still debated.
    • While crucial for primary immune response, its interaction with T-lymphocytes complicates understanding.
    • Splenectomy's benefits are theoretically plausible for interrupting early immune stages but not fully explained.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the spleen as an enigmatic organ in immune responses.
    • Suggests a need for further research into the spleen's complex role in cellular and humoral immunity.
    • Underscores the limitations of current knowledge in explaining clinical observations related to splenectomy.
