Ototoxicity of netilmicin

O Tjernström, T Denneberg, S Harris

    Acta Oto-Laryngologica
    |November 1, 1982
    PubMed
    Summary

Netilmicin demonstrated good efficacy in treating Gram-negative rod and Staphylococcus aureus infections. Ototoxicity was rare, with only one reversible case of vestibular dysfunction observed in patients receiving this antibiotic.

    Area of Science:

    • Pharmacology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Ototoxicology

    Background:

    • Netilmicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used for serious bacterial infections.
    • Assessing the safety and efficacy profile of antibiotics is crucial for clinical practice.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of netilmicin in patients with moderate to severe Gram-negative rod and Staphylococcus aureus infections.
    • To assess the ototoxicity of netilmicin by examining auditory and vestibular function.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 76 patients with moderate to severe infections received netilmicin.
    • Efficacy was determined by clinical cure or improvement.
    • Audiometry and electronystagmography were used to evaluate audiovestibular function.

    Main Results:

    • Netilmicin was efficacious alone in 47 patients and in combination with other antibiotics in 23 patients.
    • Therapeutic failure occurred in 4 cases, with 2 attributed to netilmicin.
    • Only one probable case of reversible ototoxicity (vestibular dysfunction) was detected.

    Conclusions:

    • Netilmicin exhibits significant efficacy in treating Gram-negative rod and Staphylococcus aureus infections.
    • The risk of ototoxicity associated with netilmicin appears low.
    • Pre-treatment audiovestibular examination is recommended to monitor for potential adverse effects.
