    Human polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) release factors identical to lymphocyte activating factor (LAF), a monocyte product. These PMN-derived factors enhance T cell activation, suggesting PMNs are crucial accessory cells in immunity.

    Background:

    • Lymphocyte activating factor (LAF) enhances T cell responses.
    • LAF is typically derived from monocytes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate if polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) produce LAF-like activity.
    • To determine the role of PMNs in T cell activation.

    Main Methods:

    • Collected supernatants and granules from human PMNs.
    • Tested PMN products for LAF activity using mouse thymocytes and concanavalin A (Con A).

    Main Results:

    • Supernatants and granules from human PMNs showed activity identical to LAF.
    • PMN-derived factors enhanced thymocyte proliferation in response to Con A.

    Conclusions:

    • PMNs may release factors critical for T cell activation.
