    Summary

    The fibrinogen uptake test can screen for deep vein thrombosis after hip replacement but has a high false positive rate. Venography is still needed for accurate diagnosis of DVT.

    Background:

    • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a significant complication following total hip replacement surgery.
    • Accurate detection of DVT is crucial for effective patient management and prevention of pulmonary embolism.
    • The fibrinogen uptake test (FUT) has been explored as a non-invasive screening tool for DVT.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and accuracy of the fibrinogen uptake test (FUT) in detecting deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after total hip replacement.
    • To compare the diagnostic performance of FUT with venography in patients undergoing hip replacement surgery.

    Main Methods:

    • Ninety patients undergoing total hip replacement were assessed using the fibrinogen uptake test.
    • Peripheral leg counting was performed, excluding the upper third of the thigh.
    • Results from FUT were directly compared with findings from venography in 170 legs.

    • The fibrinogen uptake test demonstrated a high false positive rate of 30%, often associated with knee joint effusion or varicose veins.
    • A low false negative rate of less than 5% was observed.
