    Summary

This study investigated if propranolol aids smoking cessation. Results showed no significant difference between propranolol and placebo groups, indicating propranolol is not effective for quitting smoking.

    Area of Science:

    • Clinical Pharmacology
    • Addiction Medicine
    • Behavioral Science

    Background:

    • Smoking cessation remains a significant public health challenge.
    • Pharmacological interventions are explored to support individuals attempting to quit smoking.
    • Beta-blockers, like propranolol, have been investigated for potential roles in addiction treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of propranolol in assisting cigarette smokers to achieve smoking cessation.
    • To determine if propranolol offers a benefit over placebo in a smoking cessation trial.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial design was employed.
    • Seventy-three cigarette smokers participated in the eight-week study.
    • Abstinence rates were compared between the propranolol and placebo treatment groups.

    Main Results:

    • Only six out of 73 subjects successfully stopped smoking after eight weeks.
    • Three subjects in the propranolol group and three in the placebo group achieved abstinence.
    • No statistically significant difference in smoking cessation rates was observed between the two groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Propranolol demonstrated no discernible helpful effect in aiding subjects to stop smoking.
    • The findings do not support the use of propranolol as a smoking cessation aid.
    • Further research may be needed to explore other pharmacological agents for smoking cessation.
