    Background:

    • Postoperative infections are a significant complication following elective colonic surgery.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of a single preoperative dose of metronidazole in reducing postoperative infections after elective colonic surgery.
    • To compare the incidence and types of infections in patients receiving metronidazole versus placebo.
    • To assess the impact of metronidazole on both anaerobic and aerobic bacterial isolates.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 38 patients undergoing elective colonic surgery.

    • Metronidazole is a valuable prophylactic agent for elective colonic surgery, leading to improved clinical outcomes.
