    Prophylactic antibiotics significantly reduce transplant nephrectomy wound infections, primarily caused by staphylococcal organisms. High-risk wounds benefit from open healing to prevent infection.

    Background:

    • Wound infections are a complication following transplant nephrectomy.
    • Staphylococcal organisms are a common cause of these infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the incidence of wound infections after transplant nephrectomy.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of prophylactic antibiotics in preventing these infections.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of wound infections in transplant nephrectomy patients.
    • Comparison of infection rates with and without prophylactic antibiotics (cefazolin sodium).

    Main Results:

    • 20% of closed nephrectomy wounds became infected without prophylactic antibiotics.
    • 81% of infections were staphylococcal.
    • No infections occurred in 18 closed wounds with prophylactic cefazolin sodium.

    Conclusions:

    • Prophylactic cefazolin sodium is effective in preventing wound infections after transplant nephrectomy.
    • High-risk wounds (preexisting infection, multiple reoperations) require open secondary healing.
