    Summary

Extended-field radiation therapy is a curative treatment for localized diffuse histiocytic lymphoma. This radiotherapy approach shows superior outcomes compared to chemotherapy, with no significant complications observed in patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Radiation Oncology
    • Hematology

    Background:

    • Localized diffuse histiocytic lymphoma (DHL) is a subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
    • Treatment strategies for DHL have evolved, with chemotherapy often being the preferred approach.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of extended-field radiation therapy in patients with localized diffuse histiocytic lymphoma.
    • To compare radiotherapy outcomes with existing chemotherapeutic approaches.

    Main Methods:

    • Ten newly diagnosed patients with localized DHL (Lukes-Collins classification) received extended-field radiation.
    • Tumors were histologically classified as follicular center cell type.
    • Patient staging included nine with Stage I and one with Stage II disease.

    Main Results:

    • All ten patients achieved complete remission and remained disease-free for 19 to 102 months (median survival 58+ months).
    • No significant differences in response or survival were noted across different histologic subtypes.
    • No immediate or long-term treatment complications were reported.

    Conclusions:

    • Radiotherapy alone appears to be a curative option for localized diffuse histiocytic lymphoma.
    • Extended-field radiation may offer superior results compared to current chemotherapy regimens for this condition.
