    Summary

    Background:

    • Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) are a widely used model for studying human hypertension.
    • Cell-mediated immunity plays a crucial role in immune surveillance and response.
    • Alterations in immune function have been anecdotally linked to hypertension.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate cell-mediated immunity in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).
    • To determine if immunological deficits precede or coincide with the development of hypertension in SHR.
    • To explore potential mechanisms linking immune dysfunction and hypertension.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed T lymphocyte populations in SHR thymus using rosette formation tests.
    • Measured lymphocyte blastogenic responses to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and concanavalin A (Con A).
    • Evaluated other cell-mediated immune functions, including delayed hypersensitivity, allograft rejection, and T-B lymphocyte cooperation for antibody production.

    Main Results:

    • Young, pre-hypertensive SHR rats showed significantly reduced numbers of immature T lymphocytes compared to other rat strains.

    Conclusions:

    • SHR rats exhibit profound deficits in cell-mediated immunity, starting before the onset of severe hypertension.
    • The observed immunological depression in SHR suggests a potential role for immune dysregulation in the pathogenesis of hypertension.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying immune dysfunction in SHR and its relationship to hypertension.
