    Summary

Complete sternal cleft, a rare congenital defect, can be surgically repaired shortly after birth. Early intervention using non-absorbable material leads to uneventful recovery and easier surgical procedures.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Surgery
    • Congenital Malformations

    Background:

    • Complete sternal cleft is a rare congenital anomaly, often associated with Cantrell's Syndrome.
    • Surgical repair is necessary for sternal defects to prevent complications.

    Observation:

    • A case of complete sternal cleft, not part of Cantrell's Syndrome, is presented.
    • The infant underwent surgical repair eight days after birth.

    Findings:

    • The surgical technique involved excising skin over the pericardium and approximating the sternal halves with non-absorbable material.
    • Post-operative recovery was uneventful in both the short and long term.

    Implications:

    • Early surgical intervention for complete sternal cleft is recommended for better outcomes.
    • Positive pressure ventilation may only be required for a limited duration post-surgery.
