    Summary

Self-monitoring of blood glucose using Dextrostix reagent strips and a reflectance meter is a simple, effective method for diabetes management. This technique improves blood glucose control and reduces hypoglycemic episodes in patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Diabetes Management
    • Clinical Chemistry
    • Patient Education

    Background:

    • Conventional urine testing for glucose is time-consuming and less informative than blood glucose monitoring.
    • Accurate blood glucose monitoring is crucial for effective diabetes self-management.
    • Newer technologies facilitate patient adherence and accuracy in blood glucose testing.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the ease of use and effectiveness of Dextrostix reagent strips with reflectance meters for patient blood glucose monitoring.
    • To assess the learning curve and patient comprehension of blood glucose monitoring techniques.
    • To determine the impact of blood glucose monitoring on glycemic control and hypoglycemic episodes.

    Main Methods:

    • Patients were taught to use Dextrostix reagent strips with Eyetone reflectance meter or Glucochek.
    • Training focused on obtaining adequate blood samples using Monolet blood lancets.
    • Instruction included optimal timing for blood glucose recordings and record-keeping.

    Main Results:

    • Blood glucose monitoring using Dextrostix is comparable in time and difficulty to urine testing.
    • Patients of varying intelligence levels can learn and perform blood glucose monitoring.
    • Improved blood glucose levels and a reduction in hypoglycemic episodes were observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Dextrostix reagent strips and reflectance meters provide a practical method for blood glucose self-monitoring.
    • Patient education and proper technique are key to successful implementation.
    • Regular blood glucose monitoring leads to better glycemic control and fewer hypoglycemic events.
