    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Endoscopic procedures
    • Biliary tract diseases

    Context:

    • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a common diagnostic and therapeutic tool.
    • Bile duct stones and strictures are common indications for intervention.
    • Endoscopic papillotomy (EPT) is a key component of ERCP for managing these conditions.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic papillotomy (EPT) in treating bile duct illnesses.
    • To assess the short-term and long-term outcomes of EPT.
    • To determine the complication rate associated with EPT when specific precautions are implemented.

    Summary:

    • This study reports on 64 cases of endoscopic papillotomy (EPT).
    • The procedure demonstrated high effectiveness with a low risk profile when appropriate precautions were observed.
    • Follow-up of 30 patients for up to 12 months showed all remained symptom-free, with no biochemical or clinical evidence of cholangitis or other complications.

    Impact:

    • Endoscopic papillotomy (EPT) is a minimally invasive, highly accurate procedure with a low complication rate.
    • These favorable characteristics secure EPT's significant role in the management of various bile duct disorders.
    • The findings support EPT as a primary treatment option, offering excellent patient outcomes and minimal patient stress.
