    Summary

    Tolmetin sodium demonstrated effectiveness in treating rheumatoid arthritis, outperforming placebo and matching phenylbutazone. It also showed benefits in osteoarthritis and soft tissue rheumatism with fewer side effects than aloxiprin.

    Background:

    • Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are chronic inflammatory conditions requiring effective pain management.
    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used for symptom relief.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy and safety of tolmetin sodium against phenylbutazone and placebo in rheumatoid arthritis.
    • To evaluate tolmetin sodium versus aloxiprin in osteoarthritis and soft tissue rheumatism.

    Main Methods:

    • Study 1: Double-blind crossover trial with 12 rheumatoid arthritis patients comparing tolmetin sodium (1600 mg/day) to phenylbutazone (400 mg/day) and placebo.
    • Study 2: Single-blind 3-month study with 34 patients comparing tolmetin sodium (1600 mg/day) to aloxiprin (initial 6 g/day) for osteoarthritis and soft tissue rheumatism.
