    Summary

    Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is found in sweat glands and their ducts, and is significantly more concentrated in sweat than in serum. This suggests CEA plays a role in the normal function of these glands.

    Background:

    • Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a known tumor marker.
    • Its presence and function in normal human tissues are less understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and localization of CEA in eccrine and apocrine sweat glands.
    • To quantify CEA levels in sweat and compare them to serum levels.
    • To explore the potential role of CEA in sweat gland homeostasis.

    Main Methods:

    • Immunohistochemistry using peroxidase-anti-peroxidase (PAP) technique.
    • Radioimmunoassay (RIA) for quantifying CEA levels in sweat and serum.

    Main Results:

    • CEA was detected in secretory and ductal cells of both eccrine and apocrine glands.
    • CEA was also identified in the cuticle lining the ducts.
    • CEA concentrations in eccrine sweat were found to be at least 30 times higher than in serum.
    • CEA may contribute to the Schiff-positive cuticle.

    Conclusions:

    • CEA is a normal component of eccrine and apocrine sweat glands.
    • Elevated levels of CEA in sweat suggest a specific function within the glands.
    • CEA may play a role in maintaining the normal homeostasis of sweat glands.
