    Summary

A randomized clinical study found that des-phe-mixed-insulin effectively controlled diabetes in 9 of 20 patients. The remaining 11 patients achieved successful diabetes control with highly purified porcine insulin (Mixtard).

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Metabolic Diseases
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Diabetes mellitus management requires effective glycemic control.
    • Insulin therapy is a cornerstone of diabetes treatment.
    • Novel insulin formulations are continuously evaluated for efficacy and safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of des-phe-mixed-insulin in achieving diabetes control.
    • To compare des-phe-mixed-insulin with highly purified porcine insulin (Mixtard).
    • To assess the safety and tolerability of des-phe-mixed-insulin.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized clinical study involving 20 diabetic patients.
    • Assessment of diabetes control based on daily urinary glucose excretion and peak blood glucose levels.
    • Treatment with des-phe-mixed-insulin, followed by Mixtard for inadequately controlled patients.

    Main Results:

    • Des-phe-mixed-insulin achieved adequate diabetes control in 9 out of 20 patients.
    • 11 patients required alternative treatment with Mixtard for successful glycemic control.
    • Mixtard therapy resulted in an average dose reduction of 26% compared to des-phe-mixed-insulin.
    • Two patients experienced allergic reactions to des-phe-mixed-insulin (one local, one generalized).

    Conclusions:

    • Des-phe-mixed-insulin demonstrates limited efficacy in achieving optimal diabetes control for a significant proportion of patients.
    • Highly purified porcine insulin (Mixtard) offers a successful alternative for patients not adequately controlled with des-phe-mixed-insulin.
    • Mixtard may allow for reduced insulin dosage and presents a viable treatment option with potential for improved patient outcomes.
