New findings on the physiology of flow properties of blood are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to hemorheologic occurrences in the decompensated microcirculation in peripheral vascular disease. The therapeutic possibilities for obtaining functional compensation are discussed. Trental (pentoxifylline) largely satisfies the complex requirements of a hemorheologically active therapeutic agent.
