A study comparing indapamide with cyclopenthiazide in geriatric patients

A U Khan

    Postgraduate Medical Journal
    |January 1, 1981
    PubMed
    Summary

Indapamide demonstrated superior blood pressure reduction compared to cyclopenthiazide in elderly hypertensive patients. Both antihypertensive drugs were well tolerated, but indapamide offered more sustained efficacy.

    Area of Science:

    • Geriatric Medicine
    • Cardiovascular Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Hypertension is a prevalent condition in geriatric patients.
    • Effective blood pressure management is crucial for reducing cardiovascular risk in the elderly.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy and tolerability of indapamide versus cyclopenthiazide in managing hypertension in geriatric patients.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized, placebo-controlled study design was employed.
    • Geriatric patients with hypertension were allocated to receive either indapamide or cyclopenthiazide after a placebo run-in period.

    Main Results:

    • Indapamide resulted in a more significant and sustained reduction in blood pressure compared to cyclopenthiazide.
    • Both indapamide and cyclopenthiazide exhibited good tolerability profiles in the study population.

    Conclusions:

    • Indapamide is an effective and well-tolerated option for treating hypertension in elderly individuals.
    • The sustained blood pressure-lowering effect of indapamide may offer advantages over cyclopenthiazide in geriatric hypertension management.
