    Background:

    • Previous studies suggested glucagon enhances bile duct and gall-bladder opacification in cholangiography.
    • Intravenous cholangiography is a diagnostic imaging technique for the biliary system.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of glucagon in improving bile duct opacification during intravenous cholangiography.
    • To determine if glucagon administration significantly enhances image quality in infusion cholangiography.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind study involving 190 consecutive patients undergoing intravenous cholangiography.
    • Patients received a one-hour intravenous infusion of iotroxamide (3.15 mg/kg/min).
    • One group received glucagon, while the control group did not, to assess its effect on bile duct opacification.

    Main Results:

    • Glucagon did not significantly enhance bile duct opacification.
    • Mean post-injection scores for bile duct opacification were similar between the glucagon and control groups (2.47 +/- 1.11 vs. 2.29 +/- 1.15).

    Conclusions:

    • The routine use of glucagon following infusion cholangiography cannot be recommended based on these findings.
    • Glucagon is not an effective agent for improving bile duct opacification in this procedure.
