    Summary

    Liver cirrhosis is linked to immune-complex mediated glomerulonephritis, causing significant renal glomerular changes. Glomerulosclerosis is a secondary effect, not the primary kidney issue in these patients.

    Background:

    • Liver cirrhosis frequently presents with extrahepatic manifestations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the specific types and prevalence of renal glomerular changes in patients with liver cirrhosis.
    • To determine the underlying mechanisms of these glomerular alterations.

    Main Methods:

    • Light microscopy, electron microscopy, and immunofluorescent methods were employed.
    • Histopathological analysis of renal biopsies from 79 liver cirrhosis cases.
    • Clinical correlation with renal function tests (PSP test), proteinuria, and hematuria.

    Main Results:

    • Mixed membranous and proliferative glomerulonephritis with diverse immune deposits was the most common finding (37 cases).
    • Other observed changes included membranous glomerulonephropathy (6 cases), IgA nephropathy (3 cases), and glomerulosclerosis (5 cases).
    • Patients with significant glomerular changes exhibited proteinuria, hematuria, and impaired PSP excretion.

    Conclusions:

    • The primary renal glomerular pathology in liver cirrhosis is immune-complex mediated glomerulonephritis.
    • Glomerulosclerosis represents a secondary consequence of the ongoing glomerulonephritis, rather than a primary disease process.
