    Area of Science:

    • Pharmacology
    • Cardiology
    • Physiology

    Background:

    • Pirbuterol is a selective beta 2-adrenoceptor agonist.
    • Its hemodynamic effects following intravenous administration require detailed investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the hemodynamic effects of intravenous pirbuterol in healthy adult males.
    • To assess the drug's impact on cardiac performance and systemic vascular resistance.

    Main Methods:

    • Nine healthy men received intravenous pirbuterol.
    • Echocardiographic and systolic time interval parameters were measured.
    • Blood pressure, heart rate, and plasma concentrations were monitored.

    Main Results:

    • Pirbuterol significantly improved echocardiographic indices of ventricular performance.
    • Systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure increased, indicating enhanced stroke volume.
    • Diastolic and mean systemic blood pressure decreased, with reduced systemic vascular resistance.
    • Dose-dependent positive chronotropic effects were observed without inducing dysrhythmias.

    Conclusions:

    • Intravenous pirbuterol demonstrates potent positive inotropic and peripheral vasodilating effects.
    • The drug exhibits a direct correlation between plasma concentration and dosage.
    • Further investigation of intravenous pirbuterol for severe low-output congestive heart failure is warranted.
