C Siegel, M E Gutgesell

American Journal of Diseases of Children (1960)
    |January 1, 1982

    Summary

Physicians in fluoride-deficient areas often misperceive water fluoride levels and underprescribe oral fluoride supplements. Enhanced physician education is crucial for ensuring adequate fluoride intake in children.

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Pediatric Dentistry
    • Community Health

    Background:

    • Oral fluoride supplementation is vital for preventing childhood cavities.
    • Many communities have water with suboptimal fluoride levels, necessitating supplementation.
    • Physician knowledge and practices regarding fluoride supplementation are critical for public dental health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the current use and knowledge of oral fluoride supplementation among physicians in Harris County, Texas.
    • To identify gaps in physician understanding of water fluoride content and appropriate supplementation dosages.
    • To evaluate the rate of dental referrals for young children by physicians.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey questionnaire was distributed to 421 physicians in Harris County, Texas.
    • The study achieved a 56% response rate from the surveyed physicians.
    • Data collected included physician practices, knowledge of water fluoride levels, and prescribing habits.

    Main Results:

    • Despite 95% practicing in low-fluoride areas, 36% of respondents deemed water fluoride adequate, with 25% unsure.
    • Among those believing water fluoride was adequate, 79% were mistaken about the actual levels (<0.7 ppm).
    • Only 35% prescribed fluoride, 45% knew the correct dose, and 50% made routine dental referrals for 3- and 4-year-olds.

    Conclusions:

    • Significant gaps exist in physician knowledge regarding water fluoride content and oral fluoride supplementation.
    • Underprescription of fluoride and inadequate dental referrals highlight a need for improved physician education.
    • Targeted educational initiatives are necessary to optimize oral fluoride supplementation in at-risk communities.
