    Summary

    Middle ear conditions like tympanosclerosis and adhesive otitis media share similar inflammatory and healing responses. A new term, tympanomastoid fibrosis, is proposed to encompass these histopathologic findings.

    Background:

    • Tympanosclerosis, adhesive otitis media, and chronic otitis media are common middle ear conditions.
    • These conditions often present with similar inflammatory and healing histopathologic findings.

    Observation:

    • Microscopic examination of middle ear tissue revealed significant fibrosis, hyalinization, and calcification.
    • Whitish sclerotic masses, particularly around ossicular chains, were observed.
    • Longstanding middle ear effusions contribute to dense, avascular fibrous adhesions.

    Findings:

    • Histopathology indicates fibrosis of submucosal connective tissue and metaplasia of mucosal epithelium as the cause of sclerotic masses.
    • Inadequate antibiotic therapy for middle ear inflammation and effusion may lead to extensive tympanic fibrosis.
