    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Ureterosigmoidostomy is a urinary diversion technique.
    • Long-term surveillance of the lower gastrointestinal tract is recommended after this procedure.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the findings of surveillance colonoscopy in patients who underwent ureterosigmoidostomy.
    • To assess the risk of colorectal neoplasia following ureterosigmoidostomy.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 14 patients who underwent surveillance colonoscopy.
    • Colonoscopies were performed 2 to 48 years after ureterosigmoidostomy.

    Main Results:

    • Five patients (37%) had benign polyps distal to the ureterosigmoidostomy implant sites.
    • All polyps were removed.
    • No colon carcinomas were identified in any patient.

    Conclusions:

    • Regular surveillance colonoscopy is crucial for patients with ureterosigmoidostomy.
    • This monitoring can detect early neoplastic changes.
    • The findings support the continued use of ureterosigmoidostomy with appropriate endoscopic surveillance.
