    Summary

    Bile reflux after gastrectomy can cause esophagitis. While bile presence correlated with esophagitis, bile acid levels did not. Roux-Y reconstruction aided esophagitis healing.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the relationship between bile reflux and esophagitis after gastrectomy.
    • To determine if bile acid concentrations correlate with esophagitis severity or symptoms.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed 10 post-gastrectomy patients for symptoms and endoscopic findings.
    • Collected esophagojejunal aspirates during endoscopy to detect bile.
    • Quantified individual bile acids using gas chromatography.

    Main Results:

    • Six patients with macroscopic esophagitis had bile in aspirates; four with normal mucosa did not.
    • No correlation found between total or individual bile acid concentrations and symptom severity or esophagitis grade.
    • Esophagitis resolved in three patients after Roux-Y reconstruction.

    • Bile presence in the esophagus is associated with esophagitis post-gastrectomy.
    • Bile acid levels do not predict esophagitis severity or symptoms.
