Background:

Diarrheal illness affected 19% of Bennington, Vermont's population in June 1978.
Symptoms included abdominal cramps, diarrhea, malaise, and headache, with a mean duration of 4.6 days.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify the cause and source of a widespread diarrheal illness outbreak in Bennington, Vermont.
To investigate the association between the illness and the municipal water supply.

Main Methods:

Case interviews detailing symptoms and water consumption habits.
Bacteriological analysis of rectal swabs from affected individuals and controls.
Investigation of the municipal water system and its primary source, Bolles Brook.

Main Results:

The outbreak was strongly associated with consuming unboiled water from the town system.
Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni was identified in 15 of 42 ill individuals but not in controls.
The water system, originating from the unfiltered Bolles Brook, was deemed the likely source of contamination.

This outbreak represents the first documented instance of waterborne gastroenteritis caused by Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni.
