Corneal astigmatism from conjunctival cysts

H K Soong, R T Oyakawa, N T Iliff

    American Journal of Ophthalmology
    |January 1, 1982

    Summary

Conjunctival cysts can cause vision loss by inducing corneal astigmatism. Surgical removal of these cysts effectively reduces astigmatism and improves visual acuity in affected patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Corneal Surgery
    • Oculoplastics

    Background:

    • Corneal astigmatism can significantly impair visual acuity.
    • Conjunctival cysts are growths on the eye's surface.
    • Undiagnosed causes of vision loss can lead to prolonged patient suffering.

    Observation:

    • Two patients presented with decreased visual acuity attributed to corneal astigmatism.
    • The astigmatism in both cases was induced by an adjacent conjunctival cyst.
    • In one patient, the cause of vision loss remained undiagnosed for two years.

    Findings:

    • Surgical excision of the conjunctival cyst led to a significant reduction in corneal astigmatism.
    • Following cyst removal, both patients experienced marked improvement in visual acuity.
    • Diagnostic tools like keratometry and eyelid examination were crucial in identifying the cyst.

    Implications:

    • Conjunctival cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained corneal astigmatism and vision loss.
    • Prompt surgical intervention for conjunctival cysts can restore visual function.
    • This highlights the importance of thorough ophthalmic examinations for persistent visual disturbances.
