    Summary

    Schizophrenia patients showed no significant differences in brain structural asymmetry compared to controls. However, left-handed schizophrenia patients exhibited higher ventricular-brain ratios, suggesting potential cerebral atrophy.

    Background:

    • Schizophrenia is often linked to abnormal brain asymmetry.
    • Previous research suggests potential structural and functional deviations in schizophrenia patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate structural brain asymmetries in right-handed schizophrenia patients.
    • To compare structural asymmetries between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Computed tomography (CT) scans were used to measure frontal and occipital petalia and width in 43 right-handed schizophrenia patients and 40 right-handed controls.
    • Ventricular-brain ratio was assessed as an indirect indicator of cerebral atrophy.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences in structural asymmetry were found between right-handed schizophrenia patients and controls.
    • Left-handed schizophrenia patients (n=8) showed a higher mean ventricular-brain ratio than right-handed patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Structural brain asymmetry does not significantly differ between right-handed schizophrenia patients and controls.
    • Further research is needed to explore potential functional asymmetries and cerebral atrophy in left-handed schizophrenia patients.
