    Background:

    • Actinomycosis is a rare bacterial infection typically caused by Actinomyces israelii.
    • Thoracic actinomycosis often presents with chronic, progressive symptoms and can mimic other lung diseases.

    Observation:

    • Two cases of chest infections caused by Actinomyces meyeri were identified over a five-year period.
    • One patient presented with chronic bilateral cavitary and fibrotic lung changes, with A. meyeri isolated from multiple sites.
    • The second patient had a subcutaneous hip abscess from which A. meyeri was cultured, alongside localized lung infection and empyema.

    Findings:

    • Actinomyces meyeri was confirmed as the causative agent in both patients.
    • Mixed infections with other aerobes or anaerobes were present, consistent with actinomycosis.
    • This represents the first reported cases of thoracic actinomycosis specifically caused by Actinomyces meyeri.

    Implications:

    • These findings expand the known spectrum of pathogens causing thoracic actinomycosis.
    • Recognition of A. meyeri as a potential cause is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
    • Further research may be needed to understand the specific clinical characteristics and epidemiology of A. meyeri infections.
