    Summary

    The hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) significantly decreases during sleep, especially during REM sleep. This reduction in HVR may contribute to sleep-related hypoxemia in various conditions.

    Background:

    • Ventilatory drives are crucial for maintaining breathing during sleep.
    • While the hypercapnic ventilatory response decreases in sleep, the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) in humans remains less understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) in sleeping men.
    • To compare HVR during wakefulness, non-REM sleep, and REM sleep.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured the ventilatory response to isocapnic hypoxia in 6 sleeping men.
    • Quantified HVR as the slope of ventilation versus decreasing hemoglobin oxygen saturation.

    Main Results:

    • HVR was significantly lower in all sleep stages compared to wakefulness.
