    Summary

    Cardiac catheterization can cause myoglobinaemia, especially with intramuscular injections. Uncomplicated procedures without intramuscular injections did not lead to elevated myoglobin levels in patients.

    Background:

    • Cardiac catheterization is a common diagnostic procedure.
    • Myoglobinaemia, the presence of myoglobin in blood, can indicate muscle damage.
    • Previous studies suggested cardiac catheterization might cause myocardial damage detectable by myoglobin abnormalities.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence of myoglobinaemia after cardiac catheterization.
    • To determine if cardiac catheterization itself causes myocardial damage detectable by myoglobin.
    • To assess the role of intramuscular premedication in post-procedure myoglobinaemia.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study of 80 patients undergoing elective diagnostic cardiac catheterization.
    • Monitoring for myoglobinaemia post-procedure.
    • Analysis of myoglobin levels in relation to procedure complications and premedication.

    Main Results:

    • 25 out of 80 patients (31%) developed myoglobinaemia after cardiac catheterization.
    • Myoglobinaemia was attributed to procedure complications in 2 patients.
    • The remaining 23 patients with myoglobinaemia had received intramuscular premedication; no myoglobinaemia occurred in patients without intramuscular injections after uncomplicated procedures.

    Conclusions:

    • Cardiac catheterization does not appear to cause myocardial damage detectable by myoglobin abnormalities.
    • Intramuscular premedication is a likely cause of myoglobinaemia following cardiac catheterization.
    • Conventional indicators of myocardial necrosis are not replaced by myoglobin testing after this procedure.
