    Summary

    Rectal compliance, a measure of rectal distensibility, was significantly decreased in most ulcerative colitis patients. Anorectal manometry may aid in surgical selection for preserving sphincter function.

    Background:

    • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease affecting the colon and rectum.
    • Assessing rectal function is crucial for managing UC and guiding treatment decisions, particularly regarding surgery.
    • Anorectal manometry and rectal compliance measurements are key diagnostic tools for evaluating rectal function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate rectal distensibility and anorectal function in patients with ulcerative colitis.
    • To compare rectal compliance and manometric findings between healthy subjects and UC patients.
    • To evaluate the utility of anorectal manometry and rectal compliance in surgical patient selection for UC.

    Main Methods:

    • Anorectal manometry was performed on 11 healthy subjects and 9 UC patients.
    • Rectal compliance was measured concurrently with manometry.
