    Summary

    Endorphins do not appear to cause mood improvements after long-distance running. A study found that naloxone, a narcotic antagonist, did not alter mood changes experienced by runners.

    Background:

    • Positive mood changes are often reported after running and jogging.
    • Endogenous opioid substances (endorphins) have been hypothesized to modulate mood during exercise.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of endorphins in mood changes associated with long-distance running.
    • To determine if blocking opioid receptors with naloxone affects post-run mood states.

    Main Methods:

    • Mood changes were assessed using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) checklist before and after running.
    • Participants received a subcutaneous injection of naloxone (0.8 mg) in a double-blind manner post-run.
    • POMS was administered again 15 minutes after injection to measure post-run/post-injection mood differences.

    Main Results:

    • No significant effect of naloxone was observed on the mood changes experienced after running.
    • The administration of naloxone did not reverse or alter the positive mood shift associated with long-distance running.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings suggest that endorphins are not the primary mediators of mood enhancement following long-distance running.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the physiological mechanisms underlying exercise-induced mood alterations.
