    Summary

Small micronuclei were observed in thyroid fine needle aspirates. Their increased frequency in carcinomas, toxic goitres, and lymphoid thyroiditis suggests a potential role in thyroid carcinogenesis.

    Area of Science:

    • Cytopathology
    • Oncology
    • Endocrinology

    Background:

    • Micronuclei are small nuclear structures that can indicate chromosomal instability.
    • Their presence in thyroid fine needle aspirates (FNA) has not been extensively studied.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the frequency and significance of micronuclei in goitre aspirates.
    • To explore the potential association between micronuclei and thyroid carcinogenesis.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of fine needle aspirates from various goitre conditions.
    • Quantification of micronuclei in thyroid cell nuclei.

    Main Results:

    • Micronuclei were detected in goitre aspirates, though in low overall frequency.
    • The highest frequency of micronuclei was observed in carcinomas, toxic goitres, and lymphoid thyroiditis.

    Conclusions:

    • Micronuclei may serve as a potential biomarker in thyroid pathology.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the role of micronuclei in thyroid carcinogenesis.
