    Summary

Endometriosis rarely affects the small intestine, causing obstruction. Early diagnosis of this rare condition is challenging, but imaging like ultrasound can help identify it for surgical treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Gynecology
    • Surgical Oncology

    Background:

    • Pelvic endometriosis commonly affects the rectosigmoid colon.
    • Small bowel involvement by endometriosis is infrequent.
    • Endometriosis is a condition where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus.

    Observation:

    • A rare case of small bowel obstruction caused by ileal endometriosis is presented.
    • Preoperative diagnosis of small bowel endometriosis is challenging.
    • Gynecologic complaints combined with intestinal symptoms in women of childbearing age are characteristic but variable.

    Findings:

    • Small bowel obstruction due to endometriosis is a rare but serious complication.
    • Diagnostic tools like small bowel roentgenography and ultrasound can aid in diagnosis.
    • Clinical presentation can be highly variable, complicating diagnosis.

    Implications:

    • Early recognition and diagnosis of small bowel endometriosis are crucial.
    • Surgical resection of the affected bowel segment is the recommended treatment.
    • Increased awareness may improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.
