    Summary

    This study reports lipodystrophia centrifugalis abdominalis juvenilis in Korean children, a rare skin condition characterized by depressed lesions. The findings suggest this condition affects children beyond infancy, necessitating a revised classification.

    Background:

    • Lipodystrophia centrifugalis abdominalis infantilis (LCAI) is a rare condition primarily reported in infants.
    • Previous literature has predominantly described LCAI in infants, limiting understanding of its presentation in older children.

    Observation:

    • Eight Korean children presented with well-defined, depressed skin lesions with surrounding erythema.
    • Lesions initially appeared in the inguinal area, spreading to the navel and vulval regions.
    • The condition affected 7 girls and 1 boy, with onset between 2 and 9 years of age.

    Findings:

    • Biopsies revealed reduced or absent subcutaneous fat in depressed areas.
    • Mild inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes and histiocytes was observed in the lower dermis and subcutis.
    • The clinical presentation and age of onset differ from typical infant cases.

    Implications:

    • This study is the first to report lipodystrophia centrifugalis abdominalis outside of Japan.
    • The findings suggest the condition is not limited to infants and warrants the title 'lipodystrophia centrifugalis abdominalis juvenilis'.
    • Highlights the need for broader diagnostic considerations for this dermatosis in pediatric populations.
