    Summary

    Vitrectomy successfully treated retinal detachments in children with Wagner's vitreoretinal degeneration when conventional surgery failed. This offers a new therapeutic option for this rare inherited retinal disorder.

    Background:

    Observation:

    • Three pediatric patients with Wagner's vitreoretinal degeneration presented with recurrent retinal detachments.
    • Conventional surgical repair methods, including scleral buckling and encircling, were attempted.

    Findings:

    • Conventional surgical repair techniques were unsuccessful in achieving retinal reattachment.
    • Following pars plana vitrectomy, all three patients achieved and maintained flat retinas.

    Implications:

    • Vitrectomy appears to be a highly effective treatment for retinal detachments in Wagner's vitreoretinal degeneration.
    • This surgical approach may offer a viable alternative for managing this challenging condition in pediatric patients.
