    Summary

    Feeding Staphylococcus aureus-contaminated milk to young calves did not lead to infection in their tissues or affect future mastitis incidence. This suggests feeding mastitic milk to calves in individual pens is likely safe.

    Background:

    • Bovine mastitis is a significant concern in dairy production.
    • Staphylococcus aureus is a common causative agent of mastitis.
    • The transmission of Staphylococcus aureus to calves via milk is a potential risk.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential for Staphylococcus aureus colonization in young calves fed contaminated milk.
    • To determine the effect of early-life exposure to Staphylococcus aureus on the incidence of mastitis at first calving.

    Main Methods:

    • Newborn calves were divided into two groups: one fed pasteurized milk with Staphylococcus aureus cultures, and a control group fed only pasteurized milk.
    • Bull calves were necropsied to assess bacterial presence in tissues.
    • Heifers were monitored for udder infections at first calving.

    • Staphylococcus aureus was not isolated from the body tissues or surfaces of bull calves.
