Autonomic arousal, interpersonal climate, and orality

J Masling, R O'Neill, E S Katkin

Journal of Personality and Social Psychology

    Summary

Highly oral male subjects showed reduced physiological arousal when interacting with a warm confederate, unlike other groups. This suggests social warmth can inhibit stress responses in individuals with oral dependency traits.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychophysiology
    • Personality Psychology

    Background:

    • Oral dependency, a personality trait, may influence emotional and physiological responses.
    • Previous research has explored the link between personality and stress reactivity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate how oral dependency traits affect electrodermal responses to social interactions.
    • To examine the impact of warm versus cold social interactions on physiological arousal in relation to orality.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed electrodermal responses (tonic conductance) in male subjects categorized by oral dependency levels (high vs. low) based on Rorschach responses.
    • Subjects underwent either a warm or cold interaction with a confederate before and after the intervention.
    • Analyzed physiological arousal changes using a three-way interaction model (Period X Condition X Orality).

    Main Results:

    • No initial baseline differences were observed between groups.
    • A significant three-way interaction revealed that highly oral subjects responded differently to social warmth or coldness.
    • Specifically, highly oral subjects interacting with a warm confederate showed no increase in physiological arousal, unlike non-orals and orals in cold conditions.

    Conclusions:

    • Social warmth appears to inhibit physiological arousal in highly oral individuals.
    • Oral dependency traits may moderate the impact of social interactions on stress and arousal.
    • The presence of a warm, interested social other can be a significant factor in modulating psychophysiological responses.
