[Relation between psoriasis and measles (author's transl)]

F Novotný

    Zeitschrift Fur Hautkrankheiten

    Summary

Measles infection may improve psoriasis. Studies show patients with a history of measles had milder psoriasis and lower antibody titers. Vaccination with a higher measles vaccine dose cleared lesions in 60% of patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Immunology
    • Vaccinology

    Background:

    • Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition.
    • Previous observations suggested a potential link between measles infection and psoriasis remission.
    • Measles antibody titers in psoriatic patients were investigated in relation to disease severity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the correlation between a history of measles infection and psoriasis severity.
    • To evaluate the therapeutic effect of an increased measles vaccine dosage on psoriatic lesions.

    Main Methods:

    • Measuring measles antibody titers in psoriatic patients with and without a history of measles.
    • Administering a three-times-higher dosage of measles vaccine to psoriatic patients.
    • Monitoring the resolution and improvement of psoriatic lesions post-vaccination.

    Main Results:

    • Psoriatic patients with a history of measles exhibited milder psoriasis and lower measles antibody titers.
    • Psoriatic patients without a history of measles showed severe disease and high antibody titers.
    • 60% of psoriatic patients treated with an elevated measles vaccine dose experienced lesion disappearance within 4-5 weeks.
    • 40% of treated patients showed improvement, with continued use of local therapies.

    Conclusions:

    • A history of measles infection may be associated with less severe psoriasis.
    • Increased dosage measles vaccination shows potential as a therapeutic strategy for psoriasis.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the immunological mechanisms linking measles and psoriasis treatment.
