Real time two dimensional echocardiography in constrictive pericarditis

B S Lewis

    The American Journal of Cardiology
    |May 1, 1982

    Summary

Real-time 2D echocardiography identified key features of constrictive pericarditis, including abnormal heart chamber sizes and a rigid pericardium. This imaging technique effectively differentiated it from other cardiac conditions.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Medical Imaging
    • Echocardiography

    Background:

    • Constrictive pericarditis presents diagnostic challenges.
    • Accurate differentiation from other cardiac pathologies is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of real-time two-dimensional echocardiography in diagnosing constrictive pericarditis.
    • To identify characteristic echocardiographic findings associated with constrictive pericarditis.

    Main Methods:

    • Real-time two-dimensional echocardiography was performed on five patients diagnosed with constrictive pericarditis.
    • Echocardiographic findings were systematically analyzed for characteristic features.

    Main Results:

    • Echocardiograms revealed decreased heart size, enlarged atria, and a thickened, immobile pericardium.
    • Dilated inferior vena cava and hepatic veins were observed, consistent with venous congestion.
    • Septal bulging during inspiration, hypermobile atrioventricular valves, and prominent diastolic filling were noted.
    • Echocardiography effectively excluded congestive cardiomyopathy and valvular heart disease.
    • Findings suggested restrictive cardiomyopathy was unlikely due to pericardial and myocardial echo characteristics.

    Conclusions:

    • Real-time 2D echocardiography is a valuable tool for diagnosing constrictive pericarditis.
    • Specific echocardiographic features can reliably identify this condition and differentiate it from other heart diseases.
