Complications at mucous membrane donor sites

    Summary

    Full-thickness mucous membrane grafts are useful for conjunctival reconstruction. However, oral donor sites can develop submucosal scarring, leading to restricted movement, necessitating surgical revision.

    • Full-thickness mucous membrane grafts are a viable option for conjunctival reconstruction.
    • The oral cavity is a common donor site for these grafts due to minimal complications.

    Observation:

    • Four cases of donor site complications were observed following oral mucous membrane grafting.
    • Complications included submucosal scarring and contracture at the donor site.

    Findings:

    • Submucosal scarring on the mouth's contoured surface led to web formation.
    • This scarring resulted in limited mandibular or lip movement.

    Implications:

    • Surgical intervention, including scar resection and Z-plasty, can restore oral function.
    • Awareness of potential oral donor site morbidity is crucial for reconstructive surgery.
