    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive Health
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a serious complication of sexually transmitted infections.
    • Long-term sequelae and morbidity following acute PID require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the long-term health consequences and morbidity in patients who experienced acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

    Main Methods:

    • A longitudinal study involving interviews with patients diagnosed with acute PID and matched controls.
    • Data collection occurred at five-monthly intervals for approximately 21 months post-initial assessment.
    • Comparison of healthcare utilization, daily routine alterations, and specific symptom incidence between PID patients and controls.

    Main Results:

    • PID patients reported significantly higher rates of outpatient visits, hospital admissions, and abdominal operations compared to controls.
    • Alterations in daily routines and work disruptions were more frequent in the PID group.
    • Persistent symptoms including abdominal pain, altered menstruation (longer, more painful), and dyspareunia were reported by a substantial proportion of PID patients up to 21 months post-acute episode.

    Conclusions:

    • Acute PID is associated with significant and persistent long-term morbidity, including increased healthcare utilization and gynecological symptoms.
    • The findings highlight the importance of effective PID management and follow-up to mitigate chronic health problems.
    • Further research into preventative strategies and long-term care for PID survivors is warranted.
