    Background:

    • Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a condition affecting blood vessels.
    • Occupational exposures, such as vibration from tools, are suspected contributors.
    • Forestry workers are a population at risk due to prolonged chain-saw use.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of Raynaud's phenomenon in Quebec forestry workers.
    • To investigate the association between chain-saw use duration and RP.
    • To identify other risk factors and consequences of RP in this cohort.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey was conducted among 1540 forestry workers in Quebec.
    • Data collected included chain-saw usage patterns, symptom onset, and other potential risk factors.
    • Statistical analysis was used to calculate prevalence and relative risks.

    Main Results:

    • Prevalence of RP was 30.5% in chain-saw users versus 8.7% in nonusers.
    • RP prevalence increased directly with chain-saw use duration; over 50% had RP after 20 years.
    • Smokers with over 10 years of use had a 6.55 relative risk.
    • Family history, arm injuries, and climate were also associated factors.

    Conclusions:

    • Chain-saw use is a significant risk factor for developing Raynaud's phenomenon.
    • The duration of chain-saw use directly correlates with increased prevalence and risk.
    • Consequences include reduced work capacity and need for disability consideration.
