Sudden cardiac death is often linked to severe coronary artery disease. Myocardial ischemia resulting from these arterial conditions likely causes these sudden deaths.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Pathology
Background:
- Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a significant public health concern.
- Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the etiological role of myocardial ischemia in sudden death among patients with coronary artery disease.
Main Methods:
- Review of patient data with a focus on autopsy findings.
- Correlation analysis between the severity of coronary artery disease and evidence of myocardial ischemia.
Main Results:
- A high prevalence of significant coronary artery disease was observed in patients who experienced sudden death.
- Myocardial ischemia was frequently identified as a consequence of diseased coronary arteries.
Conclusions:
- Significant coronary artery disease is a major contributing factor in sudden cardiac death.
- Myocardial ischemia, secondary to coronary atherosclerosis, is a likely etiological mechanism for sudden death.
Abstract:
The majority of patients who die suddenly have significant coronary artery disease, and it seems likely that myocardial ischaemia, in consequence of these diseased arteries, plays an aetiological role in causation of sudden death.
